Isaac Gatley wins award!

Isaac Gatley was presented with a Brisbane City Council Community Award!

On Thursday 3 March, Isaac was presented with a Community Award in recognition of his commitment and assistance on Salvation Sunday (the flood cleanup weekend where volunteers went out to clean Brisbane). The award was presented on behalf of Lord Mayor Campbell Newman by Deputy Mayor Graham Quirk and Councillor Krista Adams.

MacGregor SHS (where Isaac's mother works) was one of 4 registration centres for the volunteers to register and be deployed. On ‘Salvation Sunday’, Isaac along with with his parents joined other staff of MacGregor SHS to undertake the process of enrolling of the volunteers. They started work at about 6.30am, and worked very hard to register each of the people wanting to volunteer (about 3000 on that day).

Isaac worked tireless all day, supplying lanyards to those doing the registration, handing out bottles of water, checking that the volunteers were happy and well entertained and cleaning. He went to huge lengths to ensure that everything ran smoothly. At the end of the day when cleaning of the hall began, Isaac was a dynamo when collecting rubbish and sweeping out the hall.

Isaac has Achondroplasia and his parents (Jo and Greg) are the organisers of the very succesful Brisbane play group for children with short stature. So community spirit runs in the family and you can achieve big things while being short!

The SMILE Foundation is offering Family Relief Grants to help families of children with a rare disease who are struggling financially. Any bone dysplasia certainly qualifies as a rare disease, so if you need money, for example to cover an extra medical expense for your child, consider applying to the SMILE Foundation.
